“Thanks for coming over,” Sheryl said as soon as Deedee walked in the door of the bed and breakfast.

“Oh, like I need an excuse to come over,” said Deedee with a smile. She was a tall woman with a colorful manicure.

Sheryl grinned back, but then said. “This is important though. I need to introduce you to my guests. This is Heather.”

Heather shook the woman’s hand. Then Amy and Nina did the same as they were introduced.

“They’re bakers and investigators. Isn’t that fascinating?” asked Sheryl. “They’ve set out some donuts for you on the table, and then we need to pick your brain.”

“I’m always happy to chat with friends, even new ones,” said Deedee. “And what sort of donuts are they?”

Heather led her to the table and introduced her to the Butterfinger Crunch Donut. It was a happy greeting. Deedee took a bite right away and expressed how much she liked it with a happy groan.

The others joined her around the table and picked up some snacks as well. Heather kept her eyes on Deedee, eager to hear the information she would share.

“Deedee is my best friend, and she knows everything that goes on in town,” said Sheryl.

“It helps that my brother is a detective,” said Deedee. “Maybe you’ve met him? Dennis Crane.”

“We have!” said Amy. “And he talks to you? He doesn’t want to tell us much.”

“Well, he could never keep a secret from his big sister,” said Deedee.

“And maybe I can ask you this,” said Amy. “Are you related to Ichabod Crane?”

“Maybe that’s a question for later,” said Heather. “Digby is in jail right now.”

“Right,” Amy said, acknowledging she was right.

“You’ve heard about what happened at the Candy Buy Back party by now?” Heather asked Deedee.

“Of course. And I’m mighty disappointed we missed it,” said Deedee, turning to her friend. “We were planning on going, but we got distracted talking and were running late.”

“That’s right,” said Sheryl. “She came over to meet me after I got things settled in the kitchen for the morning, and we started talking about the jewel robbery. We completely lost track of time.”

“And we missed the Headless Horseman because of it,” said Deedee.

“I always had hoped to see him,” said Sheryl. “And speaking of that robbery, can you believe it was Connie Finnegan? I would never have thought she could plan something like that on her own. She’s not the sharpest tool in the shed.”

“They’re certain it was her though,” said Deedee. “There’s forensic evidence: blood at the scene. And she does have a nasty cut on her arm. Of course, she’s being quiet about all this. Won’t tell where she stashed the jewels. Got her lawyer there.”

“I know this jewel robbery is interesting,” said Heather. “But it happened before we arrived, so it’s not something that Digby could be accused of. However, they do think that he robbed the donation box and might have killed somebody.”

“I don’t want to believe it,” said Sheryl. “He seemed like a nice boy. He loved my cemetery tour.
